In lieu of more work on Oni this week, I've been doing a collaborative project with other students in Game Gen to create a 3d game in a short timespan! This time around, It's a competitive Pirate-themed game, and I'm working to create the model, rig, and animations for the characters. There's 2 I need to get done in a short period of time, so I've been really trying to crank them out quickly!
To start with, I used a similar modeling process that I used on my Mane Wolf Wrestler, turning a default cube into a full body with extrusions, proportional editing, and other techniques. For the head, I separated it from the body, subdivided it, and then bridged the higher and lower poly areas together with the knife tool to create a better surface area to work with for facial modeling.
For the hands, I actually just copied the hands I used on Manny Mane directly, edited them around, and then attached it to the base body I made!
This cut out the hardest part of the modeling process entirely, saving a TON of time.
Next, I edited the face and extruded the ears. The face was simple enough, just deleting the faces for the mouth and eyes, adding edge loops to make them into circular closed loops, then extruding inward. As well as knifing in other cuts for things like the laugh lines near the nose.
The clothing was easy as heck too, all I did was duplicate the mesh, isolate the faces for the shirt, belt, bandana, and sash, and do slight edits and extrusions to create the necessary details.
Adding some simple color with the fill tool brings it all together!
Then some rigging! some really basic stuff I've already done a few times on previous projects, with the main difference being the bendy bone face rigging I'm trying out with this project! It just isn't paired up yet, but once it is, I'm pretty hopeful for it!
And there he is! There's some clipping and weighting issues here and there, but honestly pretty good for a bit over 2 days of work, if I do say so myself!
Over this weekend I'll clean up the rigging and create some animations, then next week I'll try and power through a female pirate model too!
