Concept Art Playbook #1: Brute Heavyweight Concept

My first design for the lesson series called the Concept Art Playbook! The basic design was left very open ended as a base line to gauge concept design skills going into the tutorial program, so I tried to be a bit more creative with the prompt and go with a more whacky design to fit the idea of a "brute". When I think of a brute I immediately think of a muscly guy with a club or something similar, so I wanted to channel that into something more unorthodox, being a fat guy with a large tankard he uses to bash around his opponents.

And this is what I came up with! nothing too insanely detailed but still distinct enough to stick out, The only problem I have so far is that his silhouette is a bit blobby and muddled, so I wonder how I might improve on that sort of concept going forward. In terms of visual design, I was really inspired by the character Shugoki from For Honor, especially with his overall proportions braided belt, and oni mask.

I think of him as a medium difficulty enemy because despite being large he'll still move very slow and be a large target, meaning while he can punish you pretty hard for playing incorrectly, a good player will be able to dance around him effortlessly after learning his attacks and patterns.

And here's the prompt for reference!

That's all for now, going forward I'm going to try and model and animate this big guy in blender!
